Cross - subject relations bet vowel production and

چکیده
This study addresses the hypothesis that the more accurately a speaker discriminates a vowel contrast, the more distinctly the speaker produces that contrast. Measures of speech production and perception were collected from 19 young adult speakers of American English. In the production experiment, speakers repeated the words cod, cud, who’d and hood in a carrier phrase at normal and fast rates. Articulatory movements and the associated acoustic signal were recorded, yielding measures of contrast distance between // and // and between /u/ and //. In the perception experiment, sets of seven stimuli ranging from cod to cud and who’d to hood were synthesized, based on natural productions by one male and one female speaker. The continua were presented to each of the speakers in labeling and discrimination tasks. Consistent with the hypothesis, measures of produced vowel contrast were correlated across subjects with a measure of vowel discrimination. This finding is compatible with a model in which articulatory movements for vowels are planned primarily in auditory space.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

This paper describes two studies of 19 young-adult speakers of American English in which measures were made of: (a) phoneme contrast – articulatory distance between vowels in each of two vowel pairs and acoustic distance between the sibilants /s/ and //, (b) auditory discrimination of tokens from synthetic vowel and sibilant continua, and (c) contact of the tongue tip with the lower incisors f...

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...

The present study investigated how the vowel system of the first language (Cantonese) affects the acquisition of vowels of a second language. Forty native Cantonese-speaking adults (20 males and 20 females), with ages between 19 years 4 months and 26 years 10 months were recruited. Data from the first and second formant frequencies indicated that, for both female and male speakers, production o...
